Religion And The Scientific Future: Reflection On Myth, Science And Theology

Modernity has . . . changed but by no means eradicated either the necessity for myth or the fundamental forms of its discourse. Scientific understanding through disciplined inquiry of the spatio-temporal continuum in which we live has effected the transformation. It has exorcised the older form of the factual and, at first blush, seemed to separate religious language and thus theology from any relation to concrete actuality at all. But a deeper look at the situation of a scientific culture reveals a strange continuity. First of all, the actuality of scientific inquiry itself, perhaps the major new element in the historical character of our cultural life, reveals itself as merely the concrete cognitive manifestation of a deep experience of the divine Logos. Secondly, the mystery of passage and of freedom, of intentions and of bondage, of the anxiety and the promise of the impinging future, remain as unclarified for us as for any age – and this unclarity must be illuminated by religious discourse if we are to live with understanding, courage, and confidence. Thus does the concrete character of our culture require myth and theology in the new situation as in the old.
