Towards A Theology Of Religions

In recent decades the Catholic Church has shown increasing concern and engagement not only with other Christian communities, but also with the non-Christian religions. A number of problems which had previously received insufficient consideration from theologians have thereby become topical. Most important among these is the problem of the role and significance of the non-Christian religions in the history of redemption. In this book the non-Christian religions are studied from a theological point of view. In the first part a brief survey is made of the current statements by theologians on the non-Christian religions. The second part deals with the highly controversial problem of hermeneutics in the study of comparative religion. In his analysis of this problem the author defines the task which lies ahead for what he calls a theology of religions-to be sharply distinguished from a "neutral" interpretation as is found in comparative religion. In the third part a first outline is given of a theology of religions centered upon the idea of the history of redemption. Whereas Christianity earns the title of the "extraordinary" way of salvation in the history of redemption, the author does not hesitate to consider the non-Christian religions as ordinary ways of salvation. He is, however, aware of the provisional nature of his thesis, "which still calls for much discussion of a deeper kind, with new arguments and ideas" and which is indeed rather a quaestio disputanda than a quaestio disputata.
