Prayer As A Political Problem
Christianity, Danielou argues, is in danger of becoming a small, elite sect. There is a tendency to argue that the demands of the Gospel are such that only a few people can meet them, and the protagonists of this argument conclude that provided the Church is kept alive within this elite, the evangelization of the masses who lack education and rank ls of no real importance. But,Danielou goes on. for as long as our civilization offers no encouragement to the religious dimension in life. this state of affairs is inevitable. The danger of fashionable secularism, he says, is that it denies earthly realities their sacred character, and so falls to treat religion as a social factor of vital importance in the maturing community. As the religious dimension is vital to man, and as the essence of civilization is permitting man Io realize himself fully, the secularist approach not only lessens the chances of a Christian people surviving but also endangers civilization itself. Dani6lou provides many interesting comments on a topic of very great importance.
