"The interpretation of Genesis for the Christian reader should be no different from its interpretation for anyone else. If Genesis is to appear as a relevant literature it can only do so when its original purposes are taken seriously and it is interpreted historically. What is meant is that we not allow our later insights, whether derived from a more sophisticated knowledge or from confessional commitment, to impede the message of Genesis by imposing upon it categories that were not of its ken. It must take its place within a process of development in which it was neither the first nor the final stage. When it is thus firmly placed, and only then, we hear the sounds that have always been the voice of its universal appeal."
