The Analogical Imagination: Christian Theology And The Culture Of Pluralism
For those in any religious tradition who reject pluralism, such a complex strategy will be deemed unnecessary. Rather the truth of one's own monism can be restated over and over again in the hope that this messy pluralism will one day go away. Yet as the history of competing monisms in the modern period shows all too starkly, this hope soon dissolves into the pathos of whistling in the dark as we await the inevitable crash. For those like the present author who accept pluralism as a fundamental enrichment of the human condition, hope must lie elsewhere. But where? A simple affirmation of pluralism can mask a repressive tolerance where all is allowed because nothing finally is taken seriously. Or pluralism can cover a genial confusion. To affirm pluralism responsibly must include an affirmation of truth and public criteria for that affirmation. But how? That is the basic question this book addresses.
