Contemporary Moral Theology I: Question In Fundamental Moral Theology

FOR many years Fathers John C. Ford and Gerald Kelly conducted the survey of moral theology that is a feature of the distinguished-American journal, theological Studies. CONTEMPORARY MORAL THEOLOGY may well be said to be the fruit of these surveys. The last twenty-five years have seen many changes in the literature of moral theology. There is much that is new. There are new approaches to moral problems and morality in general. There are criticisms of the traditional presentations of the discipline. Some of these approaches and criticisms are valid; some are not. There is new knowledge. Advances in non-moral sciences, medical, sociological and the like, cannot be disregarded by the moral scientist because they substantially affect his studies. The possibility of moral science demands that there be such a thing as responsibility in man. Unless a man be accountable for his acts, there can be no question of their being good or evil. Medicine and sociology have thrown new light on this question. There are, moreover, new problems as well as new approaches to old problems. All these things constitute the burden of CONTEMPORARY MORAL THEOLOGY. Fathers Ford and Kelly are exceptionally well suited to prepare this series, both by their learning and their moral judgment.
