The appearance of a study on marriage by one of the Church's leading theologians is an important event in itself. The fact that the study is planned as a full-scale, comprehensive treatise makes it doubly important.
The first volume, published simultaneously with this one, looks at marriage in the bible. Later volumes will go on to examine the anthropological, sociological, and psychological aspects, and to consider some of the social facts and problems central to married life today. But though this second volume discusses one such problem (that of "mixed marriages”) in some detail and indeed suggests a solution. Is main concern is to trace the whole history of Christian marriage and Christian thinking about marriage.
