The Church And Third World Revolution

Wittingly or no, the Second Vatican Council has placed the Church in the very center of the revolutionary turbulence sweeping over most of the globe. In its pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World, the Council, stated, "The joys and the hopes, the griefs and anxieties of the people of this age, especially those who are poor or in any way afflicted, these, too, are the joys and hopes, the griefs and anxieties,of the followers of Christ.” For most of the world's people, grief and anxiety are more common and constant than are joy and hope. The contemporary followers of Christ carry a heavy burden, indeed, when they attempt effectively to identify with their brothers and sisters in the Third World. Pierre Bigo has, in effect, written an invaluable guide book for those Christians in Europe and the United States who, despite the challenges, are willing to shoulder the burden which the Church has placed upon them.
