Christian Revelation And World Religions / Joseph Neuner (Edited)

At the end of 1964 Piet Fransen, Joseph Masson. Hans Kung and Raymond Panikkar met in Bombay to address a conference on the subject of 'Christian Revelation and Non- Christian Religions'. Joseph Neuner has collected their papers together and the result is a statement of formidable force on the subject of how non-Christians can find salvation in their own religions and the place of this process in God's plan of salvation. Vatican II's Constitution on the Church reiterated the truth that salvation outside the Church is possible. How is it possible? This book is a very important contribution to a solution and to an analysis of the implications. Its arguments have scandalized some who see in them the undermining of the motivation of missionary work through approaching the mystery of the Church in a way that mocks the expense of missionary effort. The charge is refuted. One of the conclusions the Conference reached was that as the Church exists to serve, not to conquer, world religions, it has to think, speak and act in solidarity with them, it shares a common responsibility not in passive co-existence but in active pro-existence. This it is argued, is an attitude that stems naturally from her mission of witness to Christ before the world. This is a book for anyone interested in the meaning of 'Church' and in how it can empty itself of exclusivity in the interests of the radical universalism these writers, among a growing number of maintain is at the heart of Christianity.
