Neither religious books nor academics seem to have much to say to those who are interested in religious questions, and are dissatisfied with traditional answers. The religious quest demands the whole person and a sensitivity to all aspects of human life and thought. Moreover, religious truth is truth to live by; its expression calls for decisions now if we are to realize our highest hopes for the future. On this basis, Dr Slater looks at the way in which world religions grow and change, at the way in which their content and the life-style which they call for is affected by nonreligious factors, and at the ways in which they convey truth. The result is an attractive new exploration of religions from within, which goes a long way towards fulfilling its ideal: 'The study of religion should teach us what it would mean for us to make the moves of faith even without a guide. Others can help us to understand what we are doing. But the moves must be our own.
