The immigrant Church is dead. Let the dead bury their dead. A new form of American Catholicism will emerge at some time in the future, incorporating much of the good that was in the immigrant Church and many of its people. The losses we have suffered and those we will suffer in loyalty, organizational skill, and personnel are inevitable. But the riches of the American Catholic tradition, however unrecognized they are today, the religious hungers of our era, and the now slumbering creativity of the more sensitive and balanced members of the Catholic elites makes a resurgence of vitality and hope fulness in the American Church inevitable. Before that occurs, however, a new agenda will have to be hammered out, and many people will devote their lives to careful, painstaking, honest work on these tough, complex questions.
