Teacher In America
Professor Borzun begins his book: "Education is indeed the dullest of subjects and I intend to say as little about it as I can." What professor Borzun does talk about is teaching itself-the crucial process of communication in modern life-not only in the classroom but in society at large. The intangible, unpredictable way in which we learn-the subtle nature of learning-dominates Barzun's point of view. Education cannot be neatly prearranged. On the contrary, the teacher must suggest the full complexity, the depth and ramifications of his subject. His concern should not be with teaching methods but with the life of the material itself, nor should it be merely with the facts of history or language or mathematics, but with the ideas and forms that characterize them.
