A Theology Of Proclamation

The single most enduring task of the Church is simply to preach the word of God. In large part this task falls formally upon priests - it is they who spend years studying theology in all its dogmatic, pastoral and mysterious nuances, and who are then sent to preach the kerygma to the people of God. But at this point the priest often finds there is a tremendous gap between the spirit of the chiefly "scholastic" learning he has acquired in the seminary and the need he feels to make the revelation of God coherent, embracing, and even astounding to the people to whom he preaches. It is this perennial problem which the gifted historian and theologian Hugo Rahner deals with in A Theology of Proclamation. Here he presents the major truths of faith in the context of the divine-human economy of salvation - the context that the great preachers and shapers of the pre-dogmatic Church presented them in. In making his presentation Father Rahner demonstrates with welcome explicitness and depth how the priest can put the theological knowledge he has acquired at the service of faith in such a way as to make God's own ordering of revelation the vital factor in his preaching. The author feels strongly that it is only through this kind of Cod-centered immersion in the events of salvation - this "being-filled with the value and beauty of dogmatic truths in their mutual connections"- that the priest can communicate what God has bid him to preach, "a happy presentment of the magnificence of divine grace."
