Revelation And Its Interpretation

Revelation introduces this new series with a guide to the fundamental character of revelation itself as the communication between God and humanity in history, its discernment and its relationship to other kinds and subjects of human knowledge. It shows how the fact that Christians believe in a special link between God and humankind, established through the Old and New Testaments, does nor for them exclude belief in the positive value and significance of other religions: quite the reverse.
The author draws upon twentieth century methods of studying religious beliefs and practices as well as the approaches developed over the centuries within the Catholic tradition. The book begins with a chapter on revealed religion and its relevance in the contemporary world. Two chapters follow, dealing with the nature and content of Old Testament revelation. The fourth chapter is Christological and constitutes, as it were, the 'watershed' of the whole book. Thereafter, successive chapters deal with the role of Scripture and tradition in the Church, the relation of Christian revelation to divine revelation in other religions, the act of faith and its expression in Christian life and liturgy, and finally the question of evangelisation in a divided church and a divided world.
