Rational Theology And The Creativity Of God
Thus precise, elegant argument on the existence and nature of God makes an important contribution to philosophical theology. In recent years, philosophers have shown a renewed interest in the idea of God but their treatment has generally concentrated on exposing some incoherence in the traditional view. Dr. Ward demonstrates that this view itself varies more than some philosophers allow. He suggests that a revised, fully coherent concept may be constructed which intelligibly develops central strands in the tradition.
The author expounds and defends the idea of God as a self-explanatory being, existing by logical necessity, the prefect source of everything other than itself. What this notion leaves unexplained is the existence of freedom and creativity. He therefore aims to reconcile the necessary, immutable, eternal God of the rationalist philosophers with the creative, free, temporal God of the Biblical tradition. The result is a concept that combines the insights of most Indian and Western theists, which recognizably belongs to the main philosophical tradition, and which is at same time more consistent with contemporary knowledge.
Dr War shows such a view of God to be of central philosophical interest. He argues that there are good reasons for adopting belief in a God so defined.
