Art Of Indonesia

Since first being published in 1959, Fritz A. Wagner’s Art of lndonesia (originally entitled "lndonesia - The Art of an lsland Group') has acquired the reputation of being the definitive text on art in the archipelago. And justifiably so. lt faithfully reflects the myriad influences of race, culture, religion and location on the lndonesian peoples, as expressed in the amazing diversity of their art.

The author has created a balanced composite of the arts, documenting each individual branch. The tribal tattoos and weaves, the stylistic perfection of the performing arts, the majestic statuary and architecture, the traditional oral epic, are all represented.

Over 60 colour plates and numerous line drawings bring to life distinctive examples of lndonesian artworks. A glossary of technical terms and a chronological table of artistic developments, the length and breadth of the island chain, provide convenient reference sources.

lndonesia today is a land in transition. Yet, whatever the future holds, Art of lndonesia will serve as a lasting record of her past, a testimony to her heritage.
