Rosshalde
semi-autobiographical fourth novel-originally published in 1914, shortly after he had returned from the East-has only recently appeared in English. Rosshalde tells the story of a world-famous painter, Johann Veraguth, and of the process of self-discovery that ultimately permits him to break loose and seek an authentic life in India. Despite an empty marriage, the painter's love for his son imprisons him within the walls of his idyllic estate, Rosshalde. Tragedy finally liberates him and he sets off for the East where he hopes "a new atmosphere, pure and free from guilt and suffering, will envelop him."
