Golden Eagle



Golden Eagle, is a 4-act historical drama, written by Tsogtnarin, a Mongolian author, in 1957, about the life-and-death struggle of the people on China’s Inner Mongolian grasslands against their brutal feudal rulers half a century ago. Burkut, a resolute Mongolian youth of the grasslands, refused to bow slavishly to the whims of the feudal prince for which he was savagely persecuted. Persisting in his fight against torture and threat of death, finally with the help of the people he escaped from the tyrant's clutches. He was reunited with Samdan, the girl he loved, and the two fled far away to freedom. His heroic resistance symbolized the common aspirations of his people who honoured him with the name of Golden Eagle.
This play has many good features: The story is close to the life antl interests of the people; it is artistically presenH; it is rich in national characteristics and the play have distinct personalities; and the author shows his love and hatred clearly in his portrayal of them.
Golden Eagle has been staged by the Peking People's Art Theatre with great success, being acclaimed as one of the best Plays produced in the last ten years. The book is illustrated with pictures from the stage production.
