Protestantism

This book is a non--polemical guide to an understanding of the evolution of Protestantism from the time of the Reformers to the present. A survey of the beliefs of the Ieaders of the Reformation is followed by chapters that describe in detail their different views on grace, faith and justification, the primacy of Scripture, the sacraments and the nature of the Church. Succeeding chapters trace the Revivalist current in Protestantism from the German Anabaptist and Pietists to such figures as Billy Graham, the liberal Protestantism of the nineteenth century characterized by the search for the "historical Jesus” and the neo-orthodox reaction represented by Kierkegaard, the leaders of the Oxford Movement and, in our own times, Karl Barth. Tillich, Niebuhr and Bultmann are also discussed. A chapter devoted to Anglicanism as the meeting place of widely different theological viewpoints is followed by a discussion of the significance of latest developments in the direction of unity and a more "Catholic" trend as evinced in the World Council of Churches, the Church of South India and the liturgical and monastic revivals.
