This study presents varied aspects of the theme of secularization both as a key notion of Sociological; theorists and as a popular theological concept. The author claims that secularization could be a useful
concept were it not confused by overtones from the philosophy of history or carelessly appropriated
by existentialist theologians. Because 'secularization' has so many, often contradictory, meanings, its
usefulness depends on precise specification.
