Indonesia: Social And Cultural Revolution
This book is best described in the author's own words 'as a contemplation of Indonesian life'. It is a somewhat unusual book in that it possesses three focal points of interest and is written in the form of essays rather than a reasoned series of chapters. Firstly it is, as the title suggests, a study of Indonesian culture adapting itself to the modem world. Secondly, it bears the stamp of autobiography, since the author writes in a personal manner and draws upon his own experiences to illustrate his points. Thirdly, and perhaps most important, his close and long-standing connexion with Sukarno, and his participation in many of the events described, make his writing significant as a commentary on the often obscure and baffling course of Indonesian politics before and after independence.
Oxford in Asia Paperbacks, now in a new series format, present a wide range of books on South-East Asia and China. Many of these were widely acclaimed when first published, some others were overlooked because of the circumstances of their publication and have long been unavailable. Other books are Oxford in Asia Paperbacks originals. Titles in the series are selected for their quality of writing or for their value as reference material, and together form a delightful and informative library for readers interested in the region past and present.
