Drawing on the leading contemporary biblical scholars, the series editors have attempted to provide a commentary, based on the Revised Standard Version, that is balance d and up-to-date in terms of both its scholarship and its reflections of the contemporary relevance of the biblical text.
People sometimes talk of the “enigma" of Hebrews, and certainly it is a difficult book for modern readers. So much in it seems remote from our modern world. Yet it is a book that has exercised considerable influence down the centuries, and retains a relevant message for today.
The main concern of this volume is to try to see what the author of Hebrews wishes to say to his readers - to follow the trend of his argument. Only when that is done can we begin to see and reflect on what that argument may mean for us, in the often very different circumstances of our own day.
