What Is Man ?

The question in the title of this book was asked frequently by the writers of the Old Testament and is still being asked with anxiety in our own day when man's control over natural forces and his failure to control himself emphasize the paradox of the human situation as never before. This book examines the structure of man within the perspective of the Christian revelation as he fulfils his destiny through a series of voluntary and temporal acts. The first part outlines the basic structure of human personality, and the unity of body and soul, the relationship between man and God established at the Creation and the meaning of the statement 'oman is a person". Part two discusse: man in his historical situation as a fallen and redeemed being and also examines the Existentialist view of man in which anguish - the awareness of isolation and the sense of the absurdity of existence - is made the criterion of existence. Against this and the Marxist conception of a future collective fulfilment Fr Le Trocquer places the Christian recognition of man's unity and of the Incarnation as the key to man's being, nature, destiny and final peace.
