What Is The Incarnation?
The Christian religion is unique among all the other religions of the world in that its founder was not only a man like the founders of other religions, but also the God who created and rules over all men and the universe they live in. Jesus Christ is not merely the founder of the Christian religion: he is the focal point of ererything comprisred within it. Without him nothing would remain. This book is concerned not with the life of Christ, but with Christ him self as he is known to the Church's dogma and theology. After a first chapter examining the meaning of the word "flesh" in Scripture and the writings of the early Christians, it goes on to discuss the crucial problem of Christology - the mystery of the hypostatic union - together with its theological presentation, the language used to describe it, and the heresies that have centred on this problem. A chapter is devoted to the controversy, associated chiefly with Duns Scotus, about the divine purpose of the Incarnation. The last two chapters discuss questions that even many believing Christians find hard to get straight in their minds - the human nature of the Word, Christ’s bodily weaknesses and infirmities, the human soul of Christ, his activities, works and knowledge, including that of the Beatific Vision.
