Do Dogmas Change?

Many non-Catholics would answer the question asked in the title of this book with a firm denial, but would probably add that the Catholic Church erroneously claims the power to change dogmas. Fr Rondet clarifies this important point of dispute between Christians by explaining exactly what is meant by "development". He begins by establishing the necessary distinction between progressive revelation, the development of doctrine and the history of theology. A chapter devoted to the history of doctrine shows that this is essentially the history of the awareness of the Church as a whole of the truths contained in the revealed deposit of faith. Fr Rondet then examines in detail three examples of development: the beatific vision and the particular judgement, the bodily assumption of the Blessed Virgin and the primacy of the Pope. He shows how doctrine develops under the guidance of the Holy Spirit in response to many factors including the Church's liturgical life, the beliefs of the faithful and the challenge of heresy. The final chapter discusses heterodox and orthodox theories of development from Vincent of Lérins to Newman.
