The Spirit Of God In The Liturgy

Each year the cycle of the Church's liturgy re-enacts the drama of our redemption. This book shows how the Church, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, safeguards and refreshes the spiritual life of its members by making them take part - nowadays an increasingly active part - in that drama. Beginning with a definition of the liturgy and its development as the official public worship of the Church, the book continues with a detailed survey of the liturgical use of Scripture and tradition within the Christmas ind Easter cycles and the role of the Holy Spirit in the sacramental liturgy: the rites of baptism and confirmation, the sacrament of penance, the Eucharist, the sacrament of order, the sacrament of the sick and the consecration of the holy oils on Maundy Thursday. Final chapters discuss the season after Pentecost and the Holy Spirit's part in fostering a clearer awareness among Christians of the importance of corporate worship and of the meaning of the Mystical Body as it is expressed in the liturgy.
