Law And Morals

Norman St John-Stevas needs little introduction to English-speaking readers for most people will know him well is an expert on the subject-matter of this book which was specially commissioned from him for the Faith & Fact series. He provides here in a nutshell brilliantly clear expositions of the attitudes of English and American law and of Christianity to all those subjects which today as never before are fields oI constant controversy both inside and outside a religious context. After summarizing historical as well as contemporary, approaches to the relationship between Church and State and between law and moral liberty he particularizes on such disputed questions as capital punishment, suicide, euthanasia, birth control, artificial human insemination, sterilization and homosexuality. He illustrates the legal attitude to these problems, withits emphasis on the need for evidence of harm done to the public good, and the Catholic attitude in which the basic criterion is motivation. Parallels are also drawn between the official Protestant and the official Catholic responses to what is not morally permissible. Mr St John-Stevas documents his carefully objective analyses from Catholic and Protestant sources as well as from the case histories of relevant disputer that have been the subjects of legal proceedings.
