Macmillan Profiles Religious Leaders Of The World

Reviewed with American Indian PortraitsThese are two new titles in the Macmillan Profiles series. Many of the articles were adapted or excerpted from other Macmillan or Scribner publications, while some are completely new. Inclusion in these volumes was based on curriculum relevance, importance in history, name recognition, and representation of a broad cultural range. Each volume profiles more than 150 subjects. Religious Leaders of the World treats biblical, historical, and contemporary figures, including saints and popes. Major world religions and religious movements are represented, as are some smaller sects such as Shakers and Jehovah's Witnesses and African and Native American beliefs. American Indian Portraits also includes both historical and contemporary subjects, and although the volume centers on the U.S., Canadian and Mayan Indians do comprise some of the profiles. Each article begins with the subject's birth and death dates and, depending on the volume, religious or tribal affiliation. Besides the article text, additional material is presented in the outside margins of most pages. This material includes a time line of events and dates important to the subject, definitions of unfamiliar terms, quotes by and about the subject, and quotes pulled from the text to highlight a point. Sidebars are embedded within articles and cover topics that pertain in some way to the subject. Sidebar topics are listed in the table of contents in capital letters for easy reference. Most articles contain either a photograph or portrait of the biographee.Appendixes provide article and photo credits, a comprehensive glossary and index, and an extensive list of additional resources--books, videos, and Web sites, arranged by biographee and appropriate for the intended audience of middle- and high-school students. American Indian Portraits also contains a time line from about 1000-1997. Given the number of subjects contained in these volumes, it is a credit to the editors that there is no overlap between the two titles even when there could have been. For example, Black Elk is included in Religious Leaders of the World but not American Indian Portraits. School and public libraries looking for biographical material that is rich enough for research, yet brief enough for browsing, should consider these titles and others in the series.
