Every age that has valued science has believed that one day there will be a science of man. This belief has been growing steadily more realistic; we can now discern the rudiments of a social science, and are steadily learning to, apply the techniques on which such a science may be based. This book is principally devoted to a well documented analytical description of the main techniques so far devised by social scientists, Successive chapters are concerned with the use of documents, with observation, with interview methods and finally with experiment. These technical chapters are preceded by an examination of the basis for a social science, of the possibility of objectivity and of certain problems connected with language and logic.
