The Faith Of Teilhard de Chardin

No religious writing of this century has had quite the impact of Teilhard de Chardin’s posthumous works. They have opened up new areas of speculation both in science and theology and produced a spate of commentary in books and articles all over the world. This book is not simply one more commentary, but rather a guide throughout the network of conflicting opinions and a light on the sources of Teilhard's own inspiration. Written by a close friend, a fellow-Jesuit, and one of the most notable theologians in France today, the first part is an admirable introduction for beginners in Teilhardian thought; the second is a treatment at once cogent and courteous of some current misinterpretations.
Only five years ago (June 1962) the Holy See issued a Monitum or warning which alleged "grave errors" both in the philosophical and theological writings of Teilhard de Chardin. Recently (July 1965) Father Arrupe, the new General of the Jesuits, saluted him as "one of the great masters of contemporary thought." Recognition of this kind is in no small measure due to Pere de Lubac's brilliant expositions, here and elsewhere.
