God Within: The Mystical Tradition Of Northern Europe
One of the greatest flowerings of Christian mysticism took place in Northern Europe during the Middle Ages. The best-known figures in this tradition are Meister Eckhart and Julian of Norwich, whose writings are becoming ever more popular. Less well known, but equally interesting, are figures such as Jan van Ruusbroec, Johannes Tauler, Henry Suso and Walter Hilton. Oliver Davies discusses these and other Northern mystics, assessing their achievement and seeking to convey the essence of their spirituality in a work which, while thoroughly researched, is easily accessible to the general reader. Cod Within identifies the North European tradition as one based on a sense of inwardness. The author brings the tradition to life within the general context of the medieval-Church's spirituality, showing how it i-s distinctive from other forms of mysticism. Finally, he draws out what is of universal value in the Northern mystics, and argues that their insights are immediately relevant to us today.
