Utopia

Utopia, written in the from of a dialogue between the author and an imaginary traveller, consists of two books. The first presents a criticism of the social conditions of More’s time. tyranny and corruption were everywhere, the fundamental evil being see as the misuse of private property with resultant dispossession of the poor from the land, unemployment, and waves of crime to which society retaliated with savage laws. The second book is a contrasting vision of an ideal society on an imaginary island where tyranny and luxury have been abolished and private poverty is unknown. In thus work More not only confronts all the serious evils of his day, religious, social and political, but considers their remedy in a manner far in advance of the period in which he wrote.
