The Myth Of Neurosis: Overcoming The Illness Excuse

For far too long, we have been led to believe that common unhappiness is an illness called neurosis. We have been told that neurotics need expert help; that an excess of life's problems requires the care of the therapists who dispense talking cures (psychoanalysis) and mind candy (tranquilizers). Dr. Garth Wood thinks this is dangerous nonsense. Neurosis is a myth. Its bogus status as an illness has stigmatized millions of perfectly normal people whose chief deficiency is their inadequate approach to problems and their unrealistic expectations of what life should bring them. By encouraging the damaging "illness excuse," therapists promote the illusion that patients are not responsible for their predicament and, therefore, are powerless to help themselves. In this book, Dr. Wood shows the layman how to differentiate between genuine psychological illness and those unpleasant but natural feelings which are an inescapable and often valuable part of living.
