Salvation And Liberation: In Search Of A Balance Between Faith And Politics
The theologians of liberation, some charge, are guilty of reducing God's supernatural gift of salvation to political movements of liberation. Leonardo and Clodovis Boff, themselves the frequent targets of such charges, here discuss their stance on the relationship between salvation and liberation. Medellin, Paul VI's Encyclical Evangelii Nuntiandi, and Puebla have made the subject of liberation official-the subject of the relationship between faith and politics, between evangelization and human advancement, between historical struggles and salvation in Jesus Christ. The consecrated watchword has become "integral liberation." The Boff brothers seek to strike a balance, in the light of Puebla's great options, between the theological and political meanings of the concept of liberation. After an introduction to the basic propositions of the theology of liberation, they clarify the different connections implied in this type of theology: the relationship between kingdom of God and historical liberations, between salvation and liberation, between theological discourse and socio-analytical discourse. The authors approach their subject in as accessible a style as possible. The expositional chapters are rounded out by a lively imaginary "conversation" among a parish priest, a theologian, and a Christian activist. The various positions are presented and reflected upon, weighed, and then refuted or endorsed.
