The intention was to emphasize the social nature of our religion, by virtue of our incorporation in Christ. And to do so that my prayer will not be to me just a cozy chat between myself and God; that sin will not be reckoned. By me as something offensive which I do to God, but as something harmful I do to everyone under God; that a. starving beggar in Pakistan will mean as much to me as a hungry man next door; that the ignorance or need of my Protestant neighbor will pull at my heartstrings just as insistently as the ignorance or need of my Catholic-friend; that I may feel a sense of personal responsibility for my neighborhood, my parish, my community, and not be content to lock on may porch while I curse the folly of others.This will take a lot of doing, but it starts with me, and NOW.
