The Gospels

'Far surpasses any other modern translation in dignity and clarity' was The Times' verdict on Monsignor Knox's version of the Bible when, at his death, it summed up his many achievements. The Daily Telegraph had earlier found it 'the most considerable and perhaps the most literary version of modern times'. These views confirmed the judgement" of Dr Wand who, writing as Bishop of London in the Sunday Times, had declared: 'I know of no modern translation as good as this'. Cardinal Griffin's preface to the one-volume edition of the Bible stressed its clarity of style which had 'succeeded in giving meaning to passages which in earlier versions have been difficult to understand'. The Cardinal went on to express the hope that the Knox Bible would enable the Scriptures to find a place in every home and to have a real bearing on the life of those who used it regularly. The Universe edition of the Gospels will contribute much to the fulfillment of the Cardinal's desire. In the space of a few years the Knox Bible has come to stand for accuracy and freshness-the freshness that makes people sit up and listen to the good news of the Gospel freed from the overlay of centuries. Monsignor Knox's rendering of the stories of Our Lord's life ,and teaching enable us to share the spirit of the Church's early years when the Word of God was delivered to mankind in the language of living men.
