What can the vow of religious poverty mean to, say, the average Indian Catholic, when by entering an Indian monastery he would actually increase his standard of living ? This is just one (relatively minor) example of the questions which Fr Haas poses throughout this penetrating study of Asian Christianity-probing questions which cry out, not for "answers", but for a radical re-examination of the structures and assumptions which underlie them. But, though he probes and criticises, every page of his book shows that Fr Haas knows and loves the Asian peoples among whom he has worked and travelled, and admires many aspects of their Christianity.
