It is symptomatic of the atmosphere in which Marian theology is at present debated that recent international Marian congresses have been characterized not only by a wide divergence of opinions over a range of aspects that has grown in size from year to year but also by a yet deeper entrenchment of the mariologists in their opposing views. The result is a degree of tension among the mariologists and between them and the theologians that would as first glance make the possibility of ultimate agreement seem remote. It is this critical situation that Rene Laurentin skilfully examines. He patiently uncovers the sources of the difficulties and suggests solutions which would restore Mary to her true place in the Church.
