Christian Morality

Christian morality is constantly under fire in the contemporary world both from those actively hostile to it and from those to whom it seems wholly peripheral and certainly no more likely to help solve such problems as world hunger, war, population growth, crime, racial conflict and the relationship between the demands of society and individual sexual desires, than the moral code of agnostic or atheistic humanism. Canon Hawkins, writing especially for this series, shows that the morality taught by the Church is rooted in an awareness that men are creatures and that from this awareness should stem the formation of the Christian conscience in relation to war, tolerance, sex and politics. "A purely human moral theory", writes Canon Hawkins, "is an academic luxury which has its place in the elaboration of an analytic philosophical understanding of things, but which enjoys a highly precarious existence in the real world. In defending a Christian moral theory we are doing a great deal more than merely to assert a few extra obligations owed specifically to God; we ere defending a whole dimension of morality which ceases to exist in the absence of religious belief."
