Liberating Spirituality: A Spirituality Of Liberation
In Liberating Spirituality, a prophetic Brazilian bishop and a Nicaraguan theologian join to produce the first systematic treatment of the spirituality of Latin American liberation theology. Their aim is not to write a "theology of spirituality" but a work of spirituality itself, drawing readers ' into the mystery of Christ incarnate in human history.
After defining the meaning of spirituality the authors explore the distinctive features of Latin American spirituality. These include "a passion for reality," ethical indignation, hospitality and openness, an option for the poor, solidarity, and radical faithfulness. Casaldaliga and Vigil then address a number of specific elements of Christian spirituality, including a return to the historical Jesus, the Christian God (vs. idols), the Trinity, the Kingdom of God, the incarnation, discipleship, scripture, prophecy, charity, suffering, sin, political holiness, and martyrdom.
