Natural Law: A Theological Approach

Today the concept of natural law figures in many controversies. Its tenets are frequently accepted without question, or else rejected with equal facility. However, behind the controversies, natural law teaching has been undergoing some fundamental changes in emphasis. From the days of the Father and the medieval scholastics, Christian teaching on natural law has been associated with a certain anthropology. Consequently the natural law tended to appear continually in philosophical dress. A more decidedly theological law teaching. The firm emphasis placed by Church authorities on natural law in their more recent pronouncements, together with theological reflection on the reality of the supernatural, have contributed to this work of reconstruction. So indeed has the encounter with Protestant theology. For some year now, Prof. Fuchs’s investigation of the natural law has been regarded as a fundamental source-book of contemporary theology. Its publication in English has been eagerly awaited and is certain of a wide-spread welcome.
