Morals And Man: A Discussion Of The Modern Problem Of Being Human

The subject of this reprint of the author’s famous book Morals Makyth Man, is: How to be really human. Father Vann believes that this has always been difficult and that now it has become still more so because of the often unrecognised coercion exerted on people's minds by ready-made ideas and ideals. For today these are not only put over by social convention but also by the press, the radio, and television. He faces the problem in the light of ancient as well as modern wisdom. Indeed his outlook is largely based on the doctrine of St. Thomas Aquinas.
Father Vann thinks that the first step towards being human is to scrutinise assumptions and enquiry into absolutes. In particular he warns Christians that religion is no substitute for thought. Nor is it something which happens on Sundays only. He stresses that it is a relationship with God and therefore comprises the whole of life and that its implications extend to every aspect of human nature. No action, he says, can be non-religious-it must be religious or irreligious.
