Moral Theology From The Poor: Moral Challenges Of The Theology Of Liberation

Writing from Latin America, Francisco Moreno feels challenged and urged by the reality of "inhuman misery" [Medellin Documents] in which the majority of the people live. Thus a basic theme appears: life as a gift of the Lord. Poverty, as well-stated by the author, is a threat to life. In fact, Poverty ultimately means death, an early and unjust death of the most dispossessed in society. According to Moreno, the behavior and the morality of Christians should "save the life of the poor." This objective will simultaneously be its criterion for authenticity. As witnesses to the Resurrection, Christians should express by their commitments that life, and not death, is the final word of history. The defense and promotion of life, the whole life – spiritual and material, personal and social – is one of the great pillars of the evangelizing task of the Church in our continent today.
