The Quest For Christian Unity

" May those be angry with you who do not know with how much anguish truth is sought; . . . I find it impossible to be angry with you." Augustine's words, spoken so many centuries ago, blend today with others, with words like "dialogue" and "ecumenism," " reform " and " reunion." They are words which have come to have a familiar ring in this, a decade which has witnessed the emergence of growing attempts at serious discussion of the questions that divide Catholic from Protestant, Christian from Jew. But with all-such movements the time must come for a definition of terms; a setting down of the present and practicable possibilities alongside the hopes for the future. This would s6em to be that time. Like most theologians involved in the present ecumenical discussion, Father Baum does not see the reunion of Christendom as imminent. He does, however, see certain things which can be accomplished today, and these largely within the Catholic Church herself. Only in the Church's renewal of her own life and worship, her own rediscovery of the universality of her mission, Father Baum believes, will the hidden wealth of the Church's unity be found. And only in this and in the acknowledgement by Catholics of their own role in the divisions of the what does he find the promise of the future.
