One word, one ideal, is on the lips and in the hearts of many people today. Those not interested in God desire it, those who know and love God affirm it. Despite the sometimes catas-trophic events which threaten us with wars of total destruction, despite the ideological conflicts which divide the world, mankind, deep down really aspires to unity.
May 1944. A massive air-raid on Trent. Chiara Lubich and some of her young companions are sheltering in a dark cellar lit by a candle. She opens the Gospel at Jesus's prayer before his death: 'Father . . . ,many they all be one'. They understand that it is for this very page of the Gospel that they have been born. Jesus's request for the deepest unity among his followers became the ideal of their lives and of the Focolare Movement. 'May they all be one go that the world will believe' is its method.
