During the last twenty years our knowledge of Asian Christian theologies and of their extensive written sources, has greatly increased, as has the number of those studying and teaching such theologies. There has been, however, no attempt as yet to provide an Asia-wide and comprehensive guide to study or research in these theologies. This volume is the first of three which provides the first ecumenical, and fully representative guide to research in the authors, movements and sources for contextual Asian Christian theologies from the 7th to the 20th centuries. The central focus is therefore upon theological reflection which has arisen from the faith and experience of Christians within the particular histories and cultures of the region's peoples and which has been shaped and resourced by such contexts. Principal concerns of the scores of contributors and six editors have throughout been to introduce as wide a range as possible of such Asian Christian theologies in all their diverse forms, and to provide adequate guidance for their discovery, study and research. Chapters for regional theology and for each country in South and Austral Asia, provide detailed entries for writers and writings since the 7th century, with the largest space being given to the 19th and the 20th centuries. Particular stress is placed upon personal and bibliographical resources, as well as upon their historical contexts and theological movements, along with full references for further study. This is the fullest presentation of Asian theologies so far compiled and is a genuinely ground-breaking work.
