When feminist Christians reach back into the storehouse of tradition to bring forth names such as Mother, Midwife, Womb, Shekinah, Shaddai, Sophia, and the understanding of Holy Spirit as feminine, they do so out of new insight into the nature of the Gospel-insight that has implications for the order and language of the Church today as in every age. There is no suggestion, however, that understanding, portraying, or addressing the Divine in the feminine is the only way of relating to the Divine. This exploration is only part of the quest in the Christian community to follow the vision of wholeness given us by Christ. The prayers in this book offer one possibility of moving this exploration around justice for women and an understanding of the feminine dimension of the Divine from the intellectual realm into practice. Through a narrative and poetic approach our relationship with the Divine can be opened up and expanded. Through repetition of images over time, this new apprehension of the Divine has the possibility of moving from the intellectual level to the deepest part of our souls.
