<note>The problem raised by the discrepancy between the synoptic gospels' treatment of Jesus and that of the fourth gospel has bewildered readers of the New Testament from the Patristic era to the present. The Gospel of St John is a distinctive interpretation of the words and deeds of Jesus written from a highly personal point of view. The precise determination of the nature of that point of view and of its historical character is a matter of hermeneutics; and it is the signal achievement of Franz Mussner in explaining that nature to have drawn upon the insights of Heidegger in an analysis of such Johannine terms as "to see", "to hear", "to testify", and "to remember". The author concludes that St John's historical perspective is that of a believing witness who in remembrance see-r his subject in such a way that the hidden mystery of Jesus of Nazareth becomes visible and expressible for the Church in the kerygma.</note>
