<note>Scholasticism and Politics is Jacques Maritain's brilliant and powerful exposition of his idea of the human person considered in its spiritual dignity and the concrete conditions of its actual existence on earth. He begins by presenting his general ideas concerning integral humanism and the crisis the modern world is undergoing. He then considers the basic element of the dignity of human beings - human capacity for knowing truth; what personality is; what constitutes the freedom of the human person; and what is the meaning and finally of its life. After explaining his general ideas on these vital points he then presents suggestions for solving some of the fundamental problems of practical philosophy and the philosophy of modern history, examining the failure of the materialistic theories which sprang from a interpretation of Freud's discoveries and analyzing the relation between Catholic action and political action. Finally, he presents his conclusion that a sound philosophy of the person can lead to the rediscovery of a new democracy and of a new Christian civilization.</note>
