<note>The controversy that has dogged the Christian confessions since the Reformation is that of Scripture versus Tradition. The Protestant holds that Scripture alone has authority whereas the Catholic belief, in Fr Congar's words, is "that there is no doctrine of the Church based solely on Scripture independently of Tradition, and none that she holds solely by oral Tradition independently of Scripture: because, on the one hand, Scripture has no implications for faith independently of its meaning, given to us in the Church's delivery of it, animated by God's Spirit, and, on the other hand, Tradition possesses many links with Scripture". The purpose of Fr Congar's contribution to this series is to enquire into the nature of Tradition, the complementary dimeision which Catholics have always added to the Bible to form the joint vehicles through which they receive their faith and hand it on to future generations. The result is a clear and stimulating account of an aspect of our Christian inheritance, and of the contrary attitude to it enjoined by non-Catholic Christian confessions, that must be understood if we are to appreciate the aims of the ecumenical movement.</note>
